A short psychological horror visual novel where a teenager's social mistake leads to a deadly encounter with the iconic creepypasta killer. Read, choose, and try to survive.

About Insomnia: Jeff the Killer

Insomnia: Jeff the Killer is a free browser-based psychological horror visual novel — a yandere-flavored retelling of the Jeff the Killer creepypasta, told from the outside in. Instead of playing as the killer, you play a new transfer student at a high school in 2013, on the exact timetable where an ordinary bullied boy named Jeffrey stops being ordinary.

The game starts deceptively normal: a first day at school, a dropped pen, a friendly desk neighbor, hallway gossip. But rumors move faster than facts. A classmate gets hurt, students go missing, and the "bad crowd" led by Randall is planning something far uglier than bullying. By the time the man with the carved smile finally speaks to you, the story has already made its real point — the horror was never just the knife. It was everyone who looked away.

Chapter 1 is the current playable demo, and it already contains multiple branching routes, several distinct endings, and a gallery of unlockable CG artwork.

The Story

You arrive as the new student in the senior class of 2013. Within minutes you cross paths with Jeffrey — the quiet boy in the white hoodie who sits in front of you and barely looks up. Everyone has a version of his story: he and his brother moved to town a few months ago, Randall and his friends have been tormenting them, and something happened on the school bus recently that nobody wants to talk about.

Your choices decide how close you get to the truth — and to Jeffrey:

  • Befriend Melody or keep to yourself. Melody is the first person who's genuinely kind to you, and she knows more about Jeffrey than she lets on.
  • Get dragged into the in-crowd or refuse them. Randall's circle notices you whether you like it or not.
  • Warn Jeffrey about the party, or stay out of it. An anonymous tip changes everything — and makes you part of the story.

A week later, the party ends in fire. Jeffrey is hospitalized with severe burns, Randall and his friends vanish, and then Jeffrey disappears from the hospital without a trace. When you're cornered in a dark alley by what's left of Randall's gang, the story stops being about rumors — and the man in the white hoodie finally introduces himself.

How to Play

Insomnia is a pure visual novel: no combat, no puzzles, no timers. Everything runs on reading and choosing.

  • Click or press Space to advance dialogue
  • Choose dialogue options at decision points — every choice branches the story
  • Quick Save / Quick Load from the menu — use them before any choice that looks important
  • History log to re-read recent lines, Skip for text you've already read
  • Auto mode, text speed control, and fullscreen are all built in, plus an unlockable CG Gallery

The real gameplay is social survival. Early on, the wrong attitude gets you killed in broad daylight — dismiss Jeffrey and you can trigger a bad ending in the first act. Later, the game tests you under pressure: what you say when the knife comes out, and which way you turn when he tells you to run. Wrong answers end the story immediately; the right ones lead to Chapter 1's climactic finale.

Endings and Replay Tips

Chapter 1 hides several endings behind its choice tree, including outright bad endings and one true route that sets up Chapter 2.

  • First run: play it honest. Answer on instinct. Your first blind ending is the one the story wants you to have.
  • Quick-save before every fork. Especially the "who are you?" scene and the chase through the alleys — both punish guessing.
  • Watch how you treat everyone, not just Jeffrey. Kindness to side characters changes what you're told, and what you're warned about.
  • Don't skip scenes on your first run. The pacing and sound design do a lot of the work — one abrupt sound effect hits harder than any jumpscare image.

Sound, Art and Atmosphere

The art is the star: painterly monochrome backgrounds broken by sudden crimson, with subtle, gradually shifting character expressions. The soundtrack leans on low ambient drones and heartbeat rhythms, and the writing rewards tone — how scared you act and whether you look away changes what you see. Note for photosensitive players: flashing light effects appear in the most intense scenes.

A word of warning: Insomnia contains blood, violence, character death, and strong language. It's built for adult horror fans — and it's at its best played in one sitting, late at night, with headphones on.
